The Reason

Your big heart saved me..You saved me from the terror of the pound,
Soothing away the memories of my old life.
You have taught me what it means to be loved.
I have seen you do the same for other dogs like me.
I have heard you ask yourself in times of despair
Why you do it
When there is no more money, no more room, no more homes
You open your heart a little bigger, stretch the money a little tighter
Make just a little more room...to save one more like me.

ome days we wonder if we can get up and do it all over again. But then when we hear of - scratch that - see a success story with our own eyes, we know that WE CAN do it again.
We know that there are dozens, no hundreds, no thousands of Harris' out there. And we are determined to save as many as we can.
If you could have seen the shape this poor baby was in when we received him (sometimes we try to push those images out of our minds, but we never can) to see a photograph of him flying across the lake with his lifejacket securely buckled across his strong, full belly it does our soul good.
We were just one small part of bringing Harris to his new home in Connecticut. We gave him legs. Pilots N Paws gave him wings to a new life. And his new family has the biggest job - they gave him a home.
Rescue is a multi-faceted group. Harris has a forever family - not just the family in Connecticut, but the family who joined forces through text, facebook messenger, phone calls and flight manifests. Harris brought us all together. And for that, thank you Harris.
We are sorry your start in life was so awful. But we are so thankful that the ending is all that you've ever dreamed it to be and more.

Susie's Senior Dogs featured our longest Humane Society resident, Eureka, on their extremely popular and highly successful site today. Because of their post on facebook, Eureka has already received several potential adopters. Thank you Susie's Senior Dogs. You have done in one day what we have been trying to do for a very long time. We have copied and pasted their facebook posting and included a link. We can't thank Susie's and her staff for all their dedicated work for Eureka and the hundreds of dogs they find homes for every day. BIG SPRING, TX: On January 25, 2006 Eureka arrived at her shelter in west Texas. She was just six weeks old and had been found in a ditch. 10 years later, Eureka is still there. She is a very adoptable sweetheart who we feel deserves to take priority now in finding a home due to her long term residency at the shelter. PLEASE SHARE!

In short, Eureka's shelter was managed poorly for a long time. Finally, the shelter has changed hands and the responsible staff and volunteers are working their tails off to improve the shelter and get all of their adoptable pups in homes ASAP.

The shelter staff and volunteers wrote, "On April 24th previous management left and the board basically abandoned ship. There were 111 dogs and 50 cats at the shelter. Of the 111 dogs, a large number of them are seniors and have spent their lives in these concrete kennels. They were not walked or interacted with much aside from staff. Many brought in as puppies. They had no volunteer program and sort of shut themselves off from the community.

Eureka, who was always shy, timid, reserved but always so kind, would sometimes climb the six-foot fence to come see rescue workers who occasionally worked out there so she could get some loving. But she hadn’t done it in years. In a sense, she saw her sentence and she knew what was in store for her. She had that dullness in her eyes.

But new management had taken over the Humane Society. Volunteers began working with the dogs. They were taken for walks. A new enclosed play yard with lush green grass (a rarity in dry West Texas) was built for dogs to run free and chase balls and swim in kiddie pools or just sit under an awning and be petted by workers and volunteers.

And Eureka began to get that sparkle back in her eye. Like the loving grandmother who just wanted someone to acknowledge she was special, that someone cared about her, new life sprang forth in her. Her tail began to wag. She pranced. She jumped up and down when someone came by her kennel with a leash, hoping and praying it was her turn for a walk. She has the spirit of a puppy again. She is no longer scared. She has boundless energy, she is kind and loving. She loves nothing but to be scratched behind the ears, to lay against you and to just be held and know she is appreciated.

Eureka walks well on a leash. She comes when she is called. She does well with large dogs (her kennel mate was Stripes – a large greyhound mix) and small dogs. She doesn’t pay any attention to the cat cage, but has never lived amongst them. It’s unknown whether she is housebroken because she has always lived in a kennel but she is very smart and obedient. She is heartworm negative and is on Heartguard.

She is fearful of toddlers but does well with adults. Once you give her love and attention, she is putty in your hands. Once you gain her trust, she is yours for a lifetime. This 10-year-old beauty has sweated it out in hot Texas summers and shivered in severe Texas weather.

She deserves a home. She’s fought so hard for a forever family. Her adoption fee has been sponsored. Transportation can be provided. She must be placed in a good, loving home."
